Maa Ganga (River Ganges)

Nothing greater has gifted me more when I needed it most. She is a portal and a prayer. I was once told by a wise man that whatever you speak with her, she hears, she listens. He called her 'the living river'. So much has been written and shared about this majestic presence, the holiest of holy, Maa Ganga. All I can add is, she changed my life and continues to do so to this day. She taught me presence, endless and infinite.

Sonmat

I met Sonmat beside the River Ganges in Rishikesh, we bonded instantly over a shared love of the river. Over the course of several months I would meet with Sonmat at the Ganga Mandir (a small temple dedicated to Maa Ganga) that overlooked the river and where he lived, taking care of the Ganga murti (statue). We would talk, discuss and often sit in silence watching the river flow and the noise of life rise and fall in the waves of joyful mayhem that surrounded us. Sonmat taught me what true warriorship meant, that devotion and sacrifice were not a necessity to reach a goal, but were a way of living that was as easeful as breathing. That devotion was not adoration, but was a gratitude devoid of separation. That the love I have for another being or element, is the love that is me. He taught me that the greatest wisdom resides within the silence, and that life could be as simple or difficult as you choose to make it.
